John Turner Layton

Songwriter, singer, and pianist John Turner Layton was born in 1894 and died in 1978. He frequently partnered with lyricist Henry Creamer.

Layton and Creamer are best known for the jazz standard "After You've Gone" and "'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans".

Many of Layton's songwriting peers began their careers as performers and gradually migrated toward songwriting. Layton traveled this path backward - his songwriting heyday occurred early in his life, from approximately 1912 ("'Way Down Yonder in New Orleans") through 1922 ("Strut Miss Lizzie"). Layton then performed in a successful cabaret act in England from 1924 to 1925, and in a London club from then until his retirement in 1946.
