George Gershwin

George Gershwin, American composer and pianist, was born in 1898 and died a short 39 years later in 1937. Perhaps best known for his "Rhapsody in Blue", Gershwin wrote classical music, songs and scores for Broadway, and songs and scores for Hollywood. His music was groundbreaking in many ways.

Gershwin's music achieved great popularity during his lifetime and much of his music remains popular, including classical music (e.g. "Rhapsody in Blue", "American in Paris", "Cuban Overture"), songs that have become jazz standards (e.g. "But Not for Me", "Embraceable You", "I Got Rhythm", "A Foggy Day", and "Love Is Here to Stay"), and songs that have lived on in the "pops orchestra" genre (e.g. "Strike Up the Band" and "Swanee").
